What's best to eat late at night after a workout or fun dance party?
First of all, the BEST thing for your digestion, energy, weight and skin is to just refrain from eating late night.
If you can refrain, more power to ya. After a late evening workout, however, I am hungry! I struggled for a long time with what the heck to eat for dinner, and I've tried A LOT of different meals. Many of them ending up with bloating, staying up late until I felt digested, and waking up tired.
I'm done with compromising my beauty sleep by eating something that will tax my digestion for hours. Did you know that digestion uses about 50-80% of your energy?
What I've found is that the BEST thing for me after a workout is either blended soup or a smoothie.
Blended food digests better than most meals because it's already basically chewed up (and more thoroughly than most of us actually chew). This means I can go to sleep on time (no indigestion), sleep well (less energy drain), and wake up refreshed (my body is repaired).
It's also perfect for replenishing your muscles because the nutrients are significantly more available in blended fruits & vegetables than in whole foods. For example, even if you chew each bite of kale 25 times, the nutrients are still more available in blended kale than chewed kale.
Soups and smoothies are also convenient for late-night replenishment. You can pack something yourself or pick it up on your way to class, and it will still be good and easy to eat after class. :)
Seasonally eating will help you fee energized. In the summer, feel free to go all out on smoothies and gazpachos. In the Fall and winter, opt for pumpkin smoothies or soups. Balance the heat of summer with cooling and raw foods; balance the chill of winter with warming foods and spices. :)
Avoiding certain foods late at night will also help you tremendously. Fatty and fried foods, plus animal protein and dairy can really tax your digestive system, and sap your energy. Try to keep it light. Also, chocolate and cacao contains caffeine that can disrupt deep sleep cycles.
